Palliative medicine is becoming increasingly complex and involves caring for patients with multiple co-morbidities and patients living longer with cancer.
Imaging is of great importance in aiding diagnosis and establishing management plans with patients. Training and use of ultrasound in palliative medicine is growing and helping to diagnose and plan treatment for ascites, pleural effusions, DVTs and biliary obstruction. However, many specialists in palliative medicine have had only limited and/or historic training in interpreting X-ray images, CT and MRI scans. It would be helpful to have basic interpretation skills, alongside use of formal radiology reports, to enhance communication with colleagues and patients.
To establish basic imaging interpretation skills amongst palliative medicine specialists in order to aid symptom management plans and enhance confidence in discussing results with patients.
